Forrest Gump is among the most inspirational characters in film. He symbolizes our struggle in our daily lives and he faces it in a unique and engaging way. We could find three essential qualities of Forrest: compassion, integrity and honesty. The film and the novel tell us that if we have those three qualities in our lives, things will eventually work out for the best. We will also be able to experience true happiness in our lives. In Forrest’s character, we could see that honesty is an essential quality that we should have. In the army, Forrest makes a promise with Bubba to enter the shrimp business and despite the death of his close friend, Forrest started his own shrimping business and he goes on to support the family of Bubba. Many people would be disheartened by the death of a best friend, but Forrest shows the real strength to move on with his life. Forrest isn’t only honest, but also a person with strong mental resilience.
Forrest is also known for his significant integrity and his personality makes him a distinguished individual. Forrest Gump shows us how to have an unmatched integrity and he is able to escape any difficult situation in life. With his integrity, Forrest is able to pull himself easily out of the difficult situation. In order to become an excellent Ping Pong player, Gump shows his personal consistence. He doesn’t know anything about shrimping business and he expected that Bubba will teach him about that. Even so, he worked hard how to operate a boat and learn things needed to catch shrimps. Just like many things in our lives, things that we do in our lives are certainly not easy. Even so, Forrest is still able to do them and he is able to see opportunities that others don’t. We need to learn from Forrest on how to follow through our action and use our integrity. It means that we will be able to make the best out of our current situations.
Compassion is another strong trait of Forrest Gump and the film shows how a person with a good heart is better than all the people in the world. As a child, Forrest Gump is an intellectually slow individual with an IQ of 75. Even so, Forrest has a remarkable amount of compassion. In the army, he has strong inclination to save his friends, instead of killing the enemies. The film also shows that despite our best intention, things may not work out as we want. Lt. Dan doesn’t want to be saved, because he has lost both of his legs during the battle and he remains bitter towards Forrest for much of the film. Despite starting his life as a rather unremarkable child, Forrest shows use that life is like a box of chocolates and you won’t know what you will get. The film also shows us Forrest calmly eating a box of chocolate and it is representation of what life actually is for all of us.
